Manufacturing Operator - $21 an hour to start - THIS POSITION IS FOR COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA ONLY

The Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility, located in Columbia, SC, is part of the Westinghouse's Nuclear Fuel business and is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world. Located here are the fuel manufacturing facilities, product engineering and testing laboratories, fuel marketing and contract administration. Covering 1,155 acres that include 550,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space, the Columbia Site employs about 1,200 personnel with an annual payroll of more than $56 million.

Nuclear fuel we fabricate is used in commercial reactors worldwide to generate electricity. Fuel and fuel-related products are exported to a number of other countries, including Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, France, Japan, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. Nuclear power plants supply 21 percent of the electricity generated in the United States. About 10 percent of U.S. electricity comes from nuclear fuel manufactured by Westinghouse at the Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility.

Your Day to Day:

  • Inspectors, chemical operators, and mechanical operators support our manufacturing processes that results in a finished fuel assembly.
  • The plant is divided into three fundamental operations.
  • Chemical Operations is largely responsible for the process that converts UF6 gas into a powder, which is then pressed into pellets, in addition to running an on-site wastewater treatment facility, since the site reprocesses its own waste before discharging to the river.
  • Mechanical Operations which is largely responsibility for the manufacturing of grids, skeletons and other various mechanical components and operations to support the manufacturing of fuel assemblies.
  • Quality Control which is responsible for various inspections of manufactured grids, fuel rods, and finished fuel assemblies.

What you need to be successful in this role:

  • High school or GED
  • Prior manufacturing experience preferred, but not required.
  • The plant operates 24/7 and candidates must be available to work any shift. Ability to work ay shift is important as you could be bumped to another shift in theshift alignment process.
  • Pay increasesare strictly based on performance and qualifications
  • Chemical Operator - must be able to successfully pass a pulmonary function and fit test for wearing a respirator
  • Inspectors - must be able to successfully pass a vision test with or without corrective lenses
  • Must be willing to be clean shaven to work any area in the plant
